Background of the Study
Digital communication in Nigeria has led to the emergence of syntactic simplification, particularly on social media platforms like Twitter. Tweets, constrained by character limits, often feature abbreviated syntax, minimal punctuation, and simplified sentence structures (Umeh, 2023). This study conducts a comparative analysis of tweet structures to understand how Nigerian users simplify syntax while retaining meaning and clarity. By examining a corpus of tweets across various topics, the research investigates the linguistic strategies employed to convey messages effectively within strict constraints. The study considers factors such as lexical substitution, omission of function words, and the use of emojis and hashtags that complement syntactic simplification (Akinola, 2024). Additionally, it explores how these simplified structures influence audience comprehension and engagement. The findings will contribute to theories of digital linguistics and inform practical guidelines for effective online communication in Nigeria, reflecting broader trends in language adaptation in the digital era (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prominence of Twitter as a communication platform, there is limited research on the syntactic simplification that characterizes Nigerian tweets. The brevity required by the platform often forces users to omit key grammatical elements, which may lead to misinterpretation or ambiguity (Umeh, 2023). This gap in understanding hinders efforts to develop effective communication strategies that balance conciseness with clarity. Moreover, variations in tweet structure across different user groups remain underexplored, leaving questions about the broader implications for language change in digital contexts (Akinola, 2024). This study addresses these issues by analyzing tweet syntax and its effects on message comprehension and digital discourse efficiency (Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To identify common syntactic simplifications in Nigerian tweets.

  • To assess the impact of these simplifications on communication clarity.

  • To recommend strategies for optimizing syntactic effectiveness in digital messaging.

Research Questions:

  • What syntactic features are most frequently simplified in tweets?

  • How does syntactic simplification affect audience understanding?

  • What strategies can improve clarity in digital communication?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of syntactic simplification on Nigerian digital communication, providing insights into evolving language practices online. The findings will inform educators, digital communication experts, and social media strategists about balancing brevity with clarity, thereby enhancing effective online interaction (Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to tweet structures on Twitter and does not extend to other social media platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Syntactic Simplification: The reduction of grammatical complexity in sentence structure.

  • Tweet Structures: The linguistic form and organization of messages on Twitter.

  • Digital Communication: The exchange of information through electronic platforms.
